History
Nancy Boutin, M.D., medical director of the Salem Cancer Institute, and other local physicians wanted to make cancer patients’ experiences as easy and as comfortable as possible.
For 18 months, Dr. Boutin and the other physicians worked with hospital leaders, exploring how to ease the process for people with cancer.
The result was the Salem Cancer Institute, which strives to provide the highest quality oncology care to patients and their families— in a coordinated, efficient and supportive manner.
Founded in 2007, Salem Cancer Institute is a cooperative program between Salem Hospital, private physicians, clinics, and community organizations.
Long before the formation of Salem Cancer Institute, the oncology program at Salem Hospital earned accreditation by the American College of Surgeons as a Comprehensive Community Hospital Cancer Program and has maintained this accreditation since 1982.
The hospital boasts one of the oldest and most complete cancer registries in the nation.
Looking forward, Salem Cancer Institute aims to further streamline and enhance cancer care for our friends and neighbors through survivorship programs, complementary therapies and state of the art technology.
